The scheme gives gifted young sportsmen the opportunity to gain a recognised academic qualification whilst fulfilling their
sporting potential. The students need to do key skills as part of each programme.
Courses on offer include:
Level 1 BTEC Introductory Diploma in Sport and Leisure
Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Sport, Exercise and Fitness
Level 3 BTEC National Sport and Excercise Science
Level 3 BTEC National Sport Development Coaching and Fitness
There is an opportunity from September 2009 for students to take a City & Guilds Multi skills certificate and there are also
courses available in public services.
The students will have most of their lectures in the morning, and football training sessions in the afternoon. In total, the young players will receive 16 hours of coaching per week by St Albans City Football Club. One day a week will be reserved for football matches played at Clarence Park, home of St Albans City FC.
The football club closely monitors the progress of each athlete and there will be an opportunity to play in the reserve team and the senior team for players that excel on this course.
The students in the scheme will be encouraged to come to St Albans City home games and participate in the running of the
club on match day. They will also undertake a Level 1 coaching certificate to add to their CV and be taught the importance of
having academic qualifications when considering a career in football. The coaching course will be delivered by highly qualified
coaches who are either UEFA ‘A' or ‘B' standard.
