| The Football Conference Youth Alliance drew to a close for the Youth Academy as the City squad rounded off the season with a series of much improved performances.
The lads have been playing 'catch-up' over the last fortnight, due to their successful run in the FA Youth Cup, but comfortably won their final four matches with victories over Ipswich Town, Birmingham City and Spalding United (twice). The final game was at Clarence Park yesterday where they crushed a depleted Spalding side 6-1 with a hat-trick from the impressive Romaric Logon, a brace by James Macey and a single from George Saunders.
The loss of Ross Dedman and Rob Magwood to the first team squad after Christmas was a blow to the team's title chances, and their late season return to youth action confirmed that they were an integral part of the early season success. Luke Jackaman also made his first team debut at Bath City last Saturday and many of the squad have also been regulars in the Club's reserve side this season.
The Saints squad, which consists almost entirely of first-year students, had a difficult start to the season and have found scoring goals a problem. However, under the tutelage of Steve Castle and his coaching team their performances, if not the results, improved considerably which will stand them in good stead as they progress to the City squad next season.
Further trials for places on next year's course will take place at Oaklands College, Smallford Campus, Hatfield Road, St Albans, AL4 0JA on Wednesday 6 May from 3.30pm. For further information please contact Academy Director, Karen Gibson, at

St Albans City cruised to a 7-0 victory against Boston United in the Football Conference Youth Alliance at a blustery Clarence Park yesterday. Alex Reid led the way with a hat-trick whilst Logon Romaric with two and singles from James Macey and Ben Spaul completed the rout. Meanwhile St Albans Saints suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Wealdstone and, with only one game left to play, will finish the season at the foot of the Southern Division B despite putting in some excellent performances towards the end of the campaign. Both sides have away matches next Wednesday afternoon with Saints travelling to AFC Wimbledon and City making the short trip to Watford Hertswood. |

The build up to tonight's big game at Clarence Park against Wycombe Wanderers has revealed that three members of the current first team squad have appeared in FA Youth Cup finals. Going back farthest is our favourite custodian Paul Bastock (pictured left) who was in the Coventry City side that beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 over two legs in 1986-87. A few days after that win the City first team also won the FA Cup at Wembley by defeating Tottenham Hotspur.
The following season Mark Peters appeared for Manchester City in both legs of the final against Watford but he ended up on the losing side as a young David James performed miracles to keep City at bay and secure the cup for Watford by a slender 2-1 aggregate. Finally, as recently as 2000-01 Alex Bailey was right back in an Arsenal side that included Jermaine Pennant, Jeremie Aliadiere and Justin Hoyte. They crushed Blackburn Rovers 5-0 in the first leg then lost 1-3 at Ewood Park in the second but the victory at Highbury had been enough for them to take the Trophy.
Our lads are a long way from the final at the moment but we can all dream! Kick-off tonight is at 7.30pm and admission is £4.00 Adults and £1.00 Concessions. There has to be a result tonight and extra time and penalty kicks are available if required with the winners going through to face Watford away in the 3rd Round Proper.
