The Reserves lost out in a physical game of few chances played on a very difficult surface on Saturday.
Debutants Worrall and Thomas both had openings in the first half but failed to capitalise as the home side rarely troubled Saints.
Welwyn scored the match-winning goal direct from a free kick on the 44th minute.
Saints pushed for the equaliser in the second half but it was not until a change of formation that the home side came under serious pressure. This culminated in a goal disallowed for offside from Charles and good attempts from Taylor and Bailey.
Welwyn held on to claim a valuable 3 points as they climb to mid table.
Manager Franco Sidoli " we were well worth at least a draw today. The average age of the side was only 18 and this game is all part of the process where the young players have to adapt to senior football."
